Orthodontics is a treatment with a clear objective: provide a healthy and aesthetic mouth with the use of appropriate corrective dental apparatus (braces) in order to correct problems of poor positioning of the teeth and alterations in facial symmetry, improving the functioning of the mouth, avoiding the problem of dental caries, periodontal affectation, alterations in speech, respiration or mastication, and being able to resolve problems as common as bad breath.
There are people who, luckily, have naturally straight teeth. The size and shape of your teeth, and the manner in which they slot into the oral cavity, are all decisive reasons for having, or not, correction dental positioning.
Apart from genetic reasons, poor dental positioning may be caused through accidents or illnesses, loss of teeth that have not been treated in time, certain learned behaviours, such as for example, thumb-sucking in childhood, the interposition of the lip when swallowing or oral respiration.
The reasons for deciding on the use of orthodontics may be many.
You should know that there is no age limit for beginning orthodontic treatment. In addition, thanks to ceramic braces, the colour of which is very similar to teeth, they are almost invisible.
The duration of the orthodontic treatment will vary depending on the severity of the case, but only in very rare cases does it last longer than two years in an adult. In children the duration of treatment is far more varied as we are also dependent on the growth of each child.
As a general rule, once the orthodontic treatment has begun, you will need to visit us once a month so that we may track progress, progressively change the fixtures as required, etc.
All orthodontic treatments, in both adults and children, require maximum hygiene at home as the presence of braces on the teeth may make normal access a little more difficult. This need not be a problem as at dentsalut we will show you all the tips and tricks to ensure that wearing the orthodontic apparatus does not present a problem for you.
How do we know if we need orthodontics
If you, or your children, present any of these signs, we will request an appointment with our specialist, master in orthodontics, to begin studying the case and establishing whether or not you need braces.
- The teeth have grown through twisted, with lack of space and crowding together.
- There are protruding, elevated teeth or ones that close the wrong way round.
- The upper teeth do not close upon the lower teeth when biting.
- There is a habit of thumb-sucking.
- The child snores at night.
- If the child is 7 years of age upwards, even though it appears that everything is fine.
How do we go about orthodontics?
The success of orthodontic treatment depends on a good diagnosis (with or without braces). Each individual case will be studied meticulously and we will produce a specific treatment plan.
To evaluate a case and plan the orthodontics we make use of the first visit, during which our master in orthodontics will explore your case, determine the type of malocclusion and observe all those collateral factors that may influence or aggravate the problem. With the data obtained through different entries, we have the information necessary to begin the orthodontic treatment.
